Khonsu our emperor had led us with wisdom and vision. When he ascended to the throne, he gathered our shattered people and forged the shards into a new unity. He swept away the corruption of the Parliament and dismissed the Ambassadors, stripping them of their powers and their lavish riches. He encouraged the Scribes to teach everywhere the truth of the ancient Scrolls against the lunacy of the heretics, and under his guidance we began to prosper even as we mourned our losses. When he laid down the Imperial mantle, he did so with glory and the honor of our people.

The ascension of Ramses IV lifted up our hopes and our pride. He spoke to the people, saying,

{It has been more than twenty-one seasons since the Shivans struck our home world with fire; more than twenty-one seasons since the powers of Destruction tried to cast our race into the pit; more than twenty-one seasons that they have sought our extinction.

{And for more than twenty-one seasons, they have failed.

{Our people remain.
Our people have thrived.
Our people grow ever stronger.
Our night is passing and our dawn draws near.

{The ancient Scrolls promised us a home in the stars. Let us take hold of our birthright, granted through the Prophets long ago.}

We said in our hearts, {Surely, the new era of glory is at hand,} and we saw its signs spread across our stars.

Then, as the first season of Ramses was coming to fullness, a new subspace conduit was discovered in Beta Cygni, one previously unknown to both Vasudans and Terrans. This conduit was unstable, but unlike the many fleeting and impassable nodes that flicker throughout the void, it did not dissipate. This discovery began the saga of the Atankharz]ythi, though none could then foresee that the words of the Prophets would be fulfilled because of it.
